Text Messaging Broken

Sprint changed up their website to reflect the Sprint/Nextel merger. As a result, the text messaging form on this website as well as the Java SendNote program are probably both broken. I’ll try to make the proper adjustments soon.

Text Messaging [was] Down

Something is wrong with the Text Notification form at http://apgap.com/messaging.php which probably breaks SendNote for some poeple and makes it more difficult to download applications from ApGap.

Sprint might have changed their Text Notification form again. It will take some time for me to diagnose the problem. Sorry.

Update: Nevermind. It seems like it’s working again. Must have been a temporary problem.

Teleflip

Like every other wireless carrier, [Sprint PCS][sp] offers an e-mail to SMS gateway. You can send messages to Sprint phones by addressing an e-mail like 8005551212@messaging.sprintpcs.com. Sprint will get the e-mail, pick out the first 120 characters of the message and send them as an SMS to the corresponding phone number. To send a message to a Verizon subscriber, you need a different gateway, 8005551212@vtext.com. So what if you don’t know which carrier the recipient uses? Remember, the Number Portability system means everybody can change their carrier without changing their number. That creates a maintenance nightmare for you.

ApGap Down

Sorry that ApGap has been down for so long. I’m making an effort to get things back online but I’ve been burried with other projects. I’m re-posting this old log to get things rolling again.

SendNote and other files are now available for download direct to your mobile phone. Just go to apgap.com using your Sprint PCS phone. To save yourself some typing, you can send a link directly to your phone as a text message.

Tweaks

A server at my hosting service crashed and I lost my entire site. This is a back up copy. Hopefully it’s not too far out of date.

I’ve made a few tweaks to the website and the applications seem to be available for download again. Sorry about the delay. The e-mail doesn’t seem to be working yet, so you may have to write to me at “ApGap” at WilliamFrantz.com.

Sprint Developers

I have launched a new website called SprintDevelopers.com devoted to people who want to create and distribute applications, games, images, and ringtones for Sprint PCS handsets. In the future, ApGap.com will simply provide distribution while SprintDevelopers.com focuses on tips, tools, and techniques for creating your own programs and content.

Messaging

I’ve added a form to send text messages from this website through Sprint’s server. I made it much simpler than Sprint’s so it will work from a mobile phone and I’ve added the ability to bookmark it with things like your callback number already filled in.

New SendNote

There is a working version of SendNote with e-mail support! You can send text message to any e-mail address. Of course this means you can send text messages to just about any cell phone on any carrier.

I’ve just sent an e-mail message to those that have donated $$$. You should receive a link to download the new e-mail version of SendNote. If I missed anyone from that group, please let me know.

I’ll try to patch up any problems they find, write some documentation, clean up the code, and then put out a public release.

New MiniSendNote

There’s a new version of MiniSendNote in the Applications section. This is actually the first time I’ve made MiniSendNote available through ApGap. This is the program that started it all. Originally, you had to download a zip file, extract a jad file, modify it, upload the files to a service like PCSPix and finally download it to you phone. Not any more. Thanks to the magic of PHP, now you can fill out a form and download MiniSendNote directly to your phone.

MiniSendNote is smaller and simpler than SendNote, but it should meet the needs of casual users. The nice part is that it loads quickly. I’d like to hone it more and really take it down to the bare minimum.

Bugs and J2ME Developers

I created a “J2ME Developers” section for those that are interested in the nitty gritty of creating programs for Sprint phones. I’ll be posting technical information there.

Some people have reported bugs in SendNote v1.2 like the application just crashing. That might be due to low memory. I don’t know how much free memory is required, but I have 350KB free and it works on my Sanyo 4900.

Other people have complained about SendNote not saving data. That might be due to aborting the program instead of using the “Exit” option. SendNote will only save data when you “Exit” the program. If you stop the program by pressing the “END” key, you may lose names.
